Overwhelmed with Anger—Flooding

Anger can be a difficult emotion to manage, and at no time is it harder to deal with than when one or both partners become flooded with overwhelming emotions. You’ve probably had “flooded” arguments—these are the times when you know you should disengage but you just can’t! You have to fight to win or survive and no other outcome feels possible.

What is Flooding?

Flooding is a physiological response we have when we feel in danger or become extremely emotional. The parts of our brain needed to fight back are flooded with blood and oxygen for better performance. Unfortunately, these are taken from the parts of the brain that deal with logical thinking. When you are flooded you might sense you shouldn’t keep fighting, but you can’t seem to get the logical part of your brain to actually get you to stop. It’s not fully functioning.
